DIEGO VELAZQUEZ. LAS MENINAS. (1656)Dicen que este cuadro, se le ocurrió a Velázquez, cuando un día, trabajando en su taller, entraron jugando con gran estrépito, la Infanta Margarita de Austria con sus acompañantes.Es un retrato de familia, que refleja la vida de un día cualquiera en el Alcázar donde vivían los Reyes de España.El cuadro está al revés; es decir, que muestra no lo que el pintor ve, sino lo que ve el espectador.

Velázquez se retrató pintando el propio cuadro, ya que lo que él miraba era un espejo donde se reflejaban todos los personajes.

En la obra, también aparecen los reyes Felipe IV y Mariana de Austria, padres de la Infanta Margarita que quedan reflejados en el espejo del fondo.Se trata de una de las grandes obras maestras de toda la historia de la pintura y, por supuesto, una de las joyas más preciadas de todo el Museo del Prado.
